Second Sunday of January, Catholic Times Subscription Renewal: Long-standing diocesan policy is to provide Catholic Times to every Catholic household. Parishes receive an annual billing (a percentage of annual ordinary parish income) to support the printing of the paper. The $15.00 annual subscription is intended to cover some of the annual parish bill. (Other support for the newspaper comes from advertisements and other various donations and bequests.)

Fourth Sunday of January, Church in Latin America: Pope John Paul II called for a new vision of solidarity within the Church in the western hemisphere. With the aid of this collection, and in cooperation with the bishops of the U.S. and Latin America, grants are made to support the vast needs of the local Churches in Latin America, especially in areas of evangelization, pastoral programs, and the formation of laity, religious, seminarians.

Ash Wednesday, Aid to the Church in Central and Eastern Europe: This collection channels aid through the bishops' conferences of Central and Eastern Europe to meet the needs of rebuilding the Church -- training seminarians and lay leaders, reaching out to young people, reviving Catholic charities, and renewing programs of catechesis and evangelization.

Second Sunday of Lent, Catholic Charities: The special collection for Catholic Charities provides assistance to each of the local branches of Catholic Charities throughout the diocese. (Other sources of support are the Annual Catholic Services Appeal and other donations and bequests.)

Fourth Sunday of Lent, American Bishops' Overseas Appeal:This collection provides funding for Catholic Relief Services, USCCB Department of Social Development and World Peace, relief work of the Holy Father, and USCCB Migration and Refugee Services.

Lent, Operation Rice Bowl: This appeal provides funding for many third world self-help projects promoting agricultural, nutritional, educational growth and self-sufficiency. Seventy-five per cent is remitted to Catholic Relief Services for overseas projects, and twenty-five per cent may be retained in the diocese for local antipoverty programs.

Good Friday, Holy Land: This collection assists in the care and maintenance of Holy Sites.

Easter, Seminarians: This collection helps form and educate the future priests of the diocese. (Other sources of support are the Annual Catholic Services Appeal and other various donations and bequests.)

Last Sunday of April, Catholic Home Missions: Funds from this appeal, approved by the USCCB in 1997, help expand and strengthen the presence of the Church in the United States and its dependencies through the support of basic pastoral services in areas struggling to provide such necessities on their own. The appeal allows Catholics to help support local communities where Catholics are few, the Church is fragile, and pastors struggle to keep mission parishes afloat.

Third Sunday of May, Catholic Communications Campaign: The essential mission of the CCC is to contribute to the process of evangelization by fostering activities in relation to television, radio, and other media, and through special projects of the Catholic press. Fifty per cent of the collection is sent to the national office, and fifty per cent is retained in the diocese for use in local communication projects. From the national office portion, grants are made following recommendations by the USCCB Communications Committee.

Pentecost, Retired Diocesan Priests: The annual Pentecost collection helps provide a pension and medical care to retired diocesan priests. (Other sources of support come from the Annual Catholic Services Appeal, the diocesan endowment, and other donations and bequests.)

Sunday nearest June 29 (Solemnity of Ss. Peter and Paul), Peter's Pence: This collection assists the Holy Father in his pastoral service to the whole Church.

Third Sunday of September, Annual Catholic Services Appeal Campaign Weekend: The Annual Catholic Services Appeal is a direct-mail campaign from the Bishop to each Catholic household, seeking support for the various ministries of the diocese: the agencies and programs of the curia, the formation and care of seminarians and priests, support for the larger Catholic Church (e.g., the USCCB, the Catholic Conference of Illinois, the Holy See), andvarious other institutions, programs, and services in the diocese and beyond. Catholics are invited to make an annual gift directly to the Bishop, through installments over a six-month period.

Next-to-last Sunday of October, World Mission Sunday: World Mission Sunday was established in 1926 by Pope Pius XI, and the first worldwide observance took place in October, 1927. The collection recognizes in each local Church its catholicity and call to universal solidarity so Christians everywhere will recognize their common responsibility to evangelize the whole world. Ninety-one per cent of the revenue gathered is sent to the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, and nine per cent to the Catholic Near East Welfare Association.

Sunday before Thanksgiving, Catholic Campaign for Human Development: CCHD addresses the root causes of poverty. Projects bring poor and low-income people together to work for change in their communities. Seventy-five per cent of the collection is sent to the national office, and twenty-five per cent is retained by the diocese for local human development programs.

Second Sunday of December, Retirement Fund for Religious:The Retirement Fund for Religious provides restricted grants to any religious institute in the U.S. that has an unfunded past service liability. It distributes basic, supplemental, and special assistance retirement grants from the fund to religious institutes, based on a formula and criteria approved by the conferences of major superiors and of bishops. The appeal began in 1988 and is approved through 2007.
